A Greener Future for Fish and Chips: Finney’s Leads the Way

Finney’s, a Welsh fish and chip operator based in Benllech, Anglesey, has emerged as a leader in sustainability following its recent win at the National Fish & Chip Awards. The business was awarded the Environment & Sustainable Business Award for its long-standing commitment to responsible sourcing and environmentally friendly practices.

Established 16 years ago, Finney’s has progressively integrated sustainable initiatives into its operations. The business has eliminated single-use plastics and introduced a cash-back scheme that encourages customers to reuse their shopping bags. These measures complement its broader commitment to ethical sourcing, ensuring that all fish served are responsibly caught.

Seafood from Norway, which sponsored the award for the third year running, will host Finney’s and other category winners on an educational trip to Sortland, Northern Norway, later this summer. The three-day study programme is designed to offer a closer look at Norway’s sustainable fishing practices, including insights into stock management and the workings of modern frozen-at-sea vessels.

The Environment & Sustainable Business Award was presented by His Excellency Tore Hattrem, the Norwegian Ambassador to the UK. In his address, he underscored the enduring seafood relationship between Norway and the United Kingdom, while industry representatives highlighted the growing importance of sustainable practices in preserving the future of the fish and chip sector.

Andrew Crook, President of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), remarked that today’s fish and chip shops must balance quality food with responsible environmental practices. He praised Finney’s for embedding sustainability into their business model, setting a precedent for other operators. Similarly, Victoria Braathen, UK Director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, congratulated Finney on its achievements, noting that their success reflects a broader shift towards eco-friendly practices in the industry.

Finney’s owners, Mike and Carol, stated that sustainability has been a core focus since the business’s inception. Their commitment to eco-friendly innovations, from sustainable packaging to energy-efficient kitchen technologies, is part of a long-term vision to safeguard both the environment and the future of the fish and chip industry.

The award and the subsequent study trip signal a broader industry movement towards sustainability. As Finney’s leads the way, other fish and chip operators may soon follow, paving the way for more environmentally responsible practices across the sector.
