Best Newcomer Nominees at the National Fish and Chip Awards 2024

Best Newcomer Nominees at the National Fish and Chip Awards 2024

In the flavourful and competitive world of fish and chips, five emerging UK chip shops have distinguished themselves, securing spots on the coveted Newcomer of the Year shortlist for the National Fish and Chip Awards 2024. These establishments, which began delighting customers from 1 January 2022, have met the stringent criteria set by industry veterans, showcasing their prowess in industry knowledge, commitment to environmental and sustainable practices, exceptional employment standards, and most importantly, their knack for whipping up irresistible chip shop classics.

Spotlight on the Standouts:

- In Lincolnshire, A Salt ’n’ Battery from Crowle is making waves.

- Evans Fish Bar in Powys is representing Wales with pride.

- Yorkshire boasts two entrants: Ings Fish Bar in Redcar and Mackerel Sky in Stamford Bridge.

- From Scotland, the Redcloak Fish Bar in Stonehaven rounds out this impressive list.

Andrew Crook, President of the National Federation of Fish Friers, lauds these businesses: “Each and every business that entered the category has been very impressive. To be acknowledged for an award in less than two years of trading in such a tough climate for the fish and chip industry is demonstrative of just how hard these friers have worked to get their businesses up and running. The shortlisted chippies have set the bar even higher this year and we’re excited to see how the next stage pans out.”

Adding to the commendations, ADM/Frymax, the sponsor of the Newcomer of the Year award, echoes this sentiment through their UK Brand & Marketing Manager Andrew Marriott: “To launch a quick-service business post-pandemic and during an economic crisis is not for the faint hearted and what persistence, willpower and impressive determination these exceptional chip shops are displaying.”

“Supplying our oil to UK chip shops for over 70 years, Frymax has been and is an integral part of the trade so seeing exciting new arrivals like these makes us even more proud to support the industry.”

As these top five contenders vie for the ultimate accolade, they must next excel in the mystery shop visit and interview phase. The crowning of the winner will take place at the grand awards ceremony on 28 February at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, London.
