Ten fish and chip businesses across the UK have been named as finalists in the Field to Frier category of the 2025 National Fish & Chip Awards. The category honours those who demonstrate exceptional knowledge and skill in selecting, preparing, and serving chips that deliver the perfect combination of crunch and fluff – a hallmark of Britain’s beloved dish.
This prestigious award, organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), celebrates excellence in the art of chip-making. The awards also recognise businesses that lead in sustainability, environmental practices, customer service, and employment standards.
The Field to Frier Award highlights the intricate process behind producing chips that are more than just a side dish. From understanding the nuances of soil conditions and potato varieties to mastering cooking methods and oil selection, the finalists have showcased a passion for quality that resonates with customers across the country.
NFFF President Andrew Crook applauded the dedication of the finalists, stating: “Sinking your teeth into a portion of chip shop chips is one of life’s simplest but greatest pleasures. The knowledge and care that goes into achieving this is astounding – it’s an art! Our finalists have proven their mastery of every detail, from soil to serving plate, and their passion is infectious.”
The Field to Frier award is sponsored by Isle of Ely Produce, a major fish and chip industry supplier, and supported by Agrico, whose potato variety Babylon has gained popularity among fish and chip businesses.
Oliver Boutwood, Director of Isle of Ely Produce, expressed his pride in the finalists, noting: “We’re thrilled to help fish and chip shops refine their craft. This year’s Top 10 have demonstrated exceptional knowledge, and we wish them all the best in the next round.”
Alex Moore, National Sales Manager for Agrico, praised the role of finalists in introducing Babylon to customers: “Many finalists have educated their communities about selecting the right potato varieties for the season. It’s an honour to support this process.”
