Caffè Nero has announced record-breaking results for its Christmas trading period in the UK, marking a significant milestone in its history. Over the five weeks between 25 November and 30 December 2024, the coffee chain reported its highest-ever sales figures, including a single-day trading record of £1.5 million on Saturday, 30 November—equivalent to the brand’s total turnover during its inaugural year in 1997.
The festive period saw a 14% increase in overall sales compared to the previous year, with like-for-like sales up by 9%. For the first time, the chain recorded sales exceeding £9 million in a single week for two consecutive weeks. Additionally, the week of 9 December set a new benchmark for customer numbers, as more than 2 million people visited Caffè Nero stores across the UK, a 3.3% rise year-on-year. Over 40% of transactions during this period were made via the company’s app.
Gerry Ford, founder and group CEO of Caffè Nero, expressed pride in the company’s performance amidst challenging circumstances. “Despite a challenging macro-economic climate and the impact of two very disruptive storms, we performed extremely well,” he said. “The record number of customers who chose to visit our stores shows we continue gaining market share. The strength of our store teams and the impact of our festive menu made a real difference.”
During the festive period, Caffè Nero sold 175,000 tiramisu lattes and 100,000 mince pies, underscoring the popularity of its seasonal offerings.
The company has also been actively expanding its operations. It revealed plans to open coffeehouses within Waitrose and John Lewis stores nationwide in December. This announcement followed the Nero Group’s acquisitions of London-based FCB Coffee and Nottingham’s 200 Degrees, further strengthening its position in the UK coffee market.
