Posted by Emily on 27th Jan 2025

The highly anticipated International Fish and Chip Operator of the Year category at the National Fish & Chip Awards has announced its finalists, showcasing the global excellence that now surrounds the iconic British dish. This category, introduced just last year, celebrates international businesses that bring an authentic taste of the UK to their overseas customers. The 2025 finalists have set a high bar for excellence, blending traditional cooking methods with innovation while adhering to sustainable practices and high operational standards.

The inaugural winner of this award in 2024, Wright’s Fish & Chips in Georgia, USA, set the stage for this year’s strong contenders. This year, the finalists hoping to follow in their footsteps and claim the prestigious title are:

• Fez and Cip from Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam

• Beach Buns from Strandhill, County Sligo, Ireland

• Affenbar from Tokyo, Japan

Andrew Crook, President of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), organises the event, has seen the category evolve impressively. “When we launched our international award for 2024, the applications were fantastic, and the officials had a tough time separating the winners and runners-up,” says Crook. “This time, the entrants are showing a level of business acumen and product insight that makes this industry dynamic and forward-thinking. It’s a joy to nurture and honour the hard work of great people.”

The rigorous judging process sets high expectations for entrants, who must prove their ‘pro-fish-iency’ in every aspect of the business. From delivering outstanding food to having a strong knowledge of their products, adhering to environmental and sustainable practices, and ensuring a healthy workplace, these establishments are true champions of the fish and chip trade.

Supporting the award is Premier 1 Filtration, a company that has been a major filtration equipment supplier for over 25 years, serving the UK, Europe, and Australia. Premier 1’s owner, Steve Calvert, praised the finalists for embracing traditional cooking methods while ensuring food quality and consistency. “Hard work, good management, and teamwork pay off, and we wish all the candidates the best of luck,” he said.

The 2025 National Fish & Chip Awards ceremony will occur on 26 February in London, where the winner will be announced. As the global fish and chip industry continues to evolve, the 2025 finalists demonstrate that a passion for quality and tradition remains at the heart of this beloved dish no matter where you are.

The National Fish & Chip Awards continue to set the standard for excellence within the industry, showcasing the global reach and enduring appeal of the UK’s beloved national dish.
