M&B's Bold Move into BBQ Territory

M&B's Bold Move into BBQ Territory

Posted by Emma on 9th Feb 2024

Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) is set to unveil its latest venture, the Orleans Smokehouse, marking its first major brand introduction since the success of Miller and Carter. This move pits M&B directly against Greene King, a notable pub and restaurant sector competitor.

The launch is scheduled for 19 February in Solihull, introducing a dining experience inspired by the vibrant essence of New Orleans. Orleans Smokehouse is poised to offer 'generous portions' of BBQ favourites meticulously cooked by American smokers. These smokers maintain an optimal temperature range, using a blend of hickory, mesquite, and oak wood to flavour dishes such as crispy shrimp tacos, full racks of ribs, smoked brisket, king prawn po-boys, and burgers.

This strategic move directly challenges Hickory's Smokehouse, a BBQ brand recently acquired by Greene King with ambitions to expand nationwide. Interestingly, the first Orleans Smokehouse will open its doors just a short distance from hickory's upcoming location in Earlswood, Solihull, creating a hotbed for BBQ enthusiasts.

Responding to this development, a spokesperson for hickory's highlighted their long-standing presence in the BBQ scene and expressed curiosity about M&B's interpretation of New Orleans culinary traditions. Conversely, M&B emphasized the thoughtful consideration behind the launch of Orleans Smokehouse, citing a complex decision-making process influenced by various factors, including location demographics and investment costs. Solihull was chosen for its ideal conditions that align with M&B's investment criteria.

As Mitchells & Butlers introduces Orleans Smokehouse to the competitive BBQ landscape, this initiative not only celebrates the rich flavours of New Orleans but also signifies a new chapter in the UK's restaurant rivalry.
