Meet the Finalists for Newcomer of the Year 2025

Posted by Emily on 21st Nov 2024

Three fish and chip shops, each less than two years old, have earned their place as finalists in the National Fish & Chip Awards 2025 for the coveted Newcomer of the Year award. Representing the regions of Devon, Yorkshire, and Northern Ireland, these businesses are proving that success in Britain’s most beloved culinary tradition can come swiftly with innovation, dedication, and passion.

The finalists are:

  • Alan’s Fish and Chips, Cullompton, Devon
  • Mackerel Sky, Stamford Bridge, East Riding of Yorkshire
  • Skipper Jacks, Clogher, County Tyrone
  • These rising stars have impressed judges across multiple stages of the competition, excelling in product knowledge, environmental sustainability, teamwork, and more. The culmination of their efforts will see them travel to London in February, where one will be crowned Newcomer of the Year, following in the footsteps of Redcloak Fish Bar in Stonehaven, Scotland, the 2024 winner.

Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers and organiser of the awards, praised the finalists:

“Congratulations to the finalists who have outdone themselves in all criteria. Each business owner has demonstrated a hunger to learn and absorb feedback, which is why they’ve made it to the final. The calibre on display is outstanding, and there’s no doubt they will achieve great success regardless of the outcome.”

The next stage of the competition will involve mystery shopper visits to assess the finalists’ performance in real-world settings, ensuring the winner is truly deserving of the title.

With excitement building ahead of the finale, the spotlight shines on these exceptional newcomers who are shaping the future of the fish and chip industry.
