Nando's Apprenticeship Programme Grows

Posted by Emma on 20th Aug 2024

Nando's has officially launched the second year of its Hospitality Heroes Level 2 Apprenticeship Programme. This initiative follows the success of its inaugural year, during which over 100 apprentices embarked on a journey to develop essential skills in the hospitality industry.

The programme, designed for school leavers and individuals over 16 across England, offers participants a comprehensive Level 2 Hospitality Team Member Apprenticeship. The 15-month syllabus, created in collaboration with Lifetime Training, covers a range of vital areas, including customer service, team leadership, and personal development. Apprentices also benefit from hands-on experience, working alongside seasoned Nando's team members in various restaurant settings.

As the first cohort of 114 applicants nears the completion of their training, they are poised to graduate later this year, marking a significant milestone in their careers. Maria Horn, Nando's Chief People Officer, expressed her enthusiasm for the programme's impact. "At Nando's, it's our people who bring the passion to our restaurants, and it's been fantastic to see our more than 100-strong cohort of Hospitality Heroes apprentices flourish this year," she stated.

Horn also highlighted the company's commitment to its apprentices, noting that they receive the same salary as full-time team members and enjoy a range of benefits, including free meals during shifts, discounts of up to 40% for themselves and five guests, and a paid sabbatical after five years of service. "Launching the programme's second year supports our ambition to develop future managers within our business. We are committed to providing clear career paths within the hospitality industry and welcome applicants looking to work in a fast-paced and varied environment," Horn added.

The programme has already made a significant difference in the lives of its participants. Jonny Da Cruz, currently undertaking the apprenticeship at Nando's Richmond, shared his experience: "I was looking for a job as a chef, but as I didn't have any experience, I wasn't having much luck. I knew of Nando's and found out about their apprenticeship programmes. It's a great opportunity – I knew I'd learn the cooking skills I wanted while earning a living."

Similarly, Chloe Mcmenemy, an apprentice at Nando's Sheffield Meadowhall, emphasised the programme's advantages: "The best thing about doing an apprenticeship is that you can earn and learn – you get paid to do your coursework. My Patrao (manager) lets me use his office, put some music on, and gives me the time and space to concentrate."

As Nando continues to invest in its people and their development, the expansion of the Hospitality Heroes programme stands as a testament to the company's dedication to fostering talent within the hospitality industry. Through this initiative, Nando empowers its employees and contributes to nurturing the next generation of hospitality leaders.
