The National Fish & Chip Awards have revealed the top contenders in their prestigious Environmental and Sustainable Business category. They recognise industry leaders setting the bar for sustainability and responsible business practices.
Following a rigorous evaluation by a panel of senior industry experts, the finalists were chosen based on their commitment to sustainability in multiple facets of their operations. This year’s submissions demonstrated an outstanding commitment to reducing environmental impact and improving efficiency, alongside a focus on ethical sourcing and employee development.
The finalists in this vital category are:
• Pisces, Wirral (Merseyside)
• Two Gate Fisheries, Barnsley (Yorkshire)
• Finney’s, Benllech (Wales)
Andrew Crook, President of the National Federation of Fish Friers, praised the finalists for their exceptional efforts in embracing sustainability. He noted that while sustainably sourced fish is a cornerstone of the industry, a holistic approach to environmental responsibility is increasingly necessary for the future. “These businesses are setting a brilliant example for the sector, not just by sourcing fish responsibly but by incorporating sustainability across all areas of their operations, from waste reduction to energy efficiency,” Crook said. “Their achievements send a powerful message that it’s possible to prioritise the environment while achieving long-term success.”
The awards have become an essential platform for promoting sustainable practices within the industry, and the Environmental and Sustainable Business category is a crucial part of this shift. The winners, announced on 26 February at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, will take the baton from 2024’s champions, Whitehead’s Fish and Chips, based in Hornsea.
Victoria Braathen, UK Director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, which sponsors the category, congratulated the finalists, emphasising the importance of such initiatives. “Seafood from Norway is proud to support this category and celebrate businesses committed to sustainability. Their efforts ensure that we’re not only protecting the environment but also securing the future of the fish and chip industry,” she said.
These three finalists are not just vying for an award but leading the charge for a greener, more sustainable future within the fish and chip sector. Their dedication to continuous improvement is a model for others to follow, proving that environmental responsibility and business success can go hand in hand.
