Papas Group's New Franchise Venture with JD Wetherspoon

In a significant development for the British pub industry, the family-owned Papas Group has entered into a notable franchise agreement with JD Wetherspoon. This new accord will witness Papas Group operating 15 pubs under the esteemed JD Wetherspoon brand. 
Papas Group, renowned for its success with casual dining outlets such as Papa’s Fish and Chips and Wendy’s, primarily in northern England, is now set to expand its portfolio with this franchise venture. The inaugural pub, named Hykeham Manor, will be located at Gateway Park in Lincoln, on the site of a former Gateway Park Brewers Fayre. Subsequent openings are planned in the coming months in Annitsford, Stockton-on-Tees, and Emersons Green.
JD Wetherspoon already operates five franchise pubs with Haven Holiday Parks and holds agreements with Newcastle and Hull Universities. There is also a presence on the Isle of Man through a partnership with Thompson Holdings. Michael Barron, JD Wetherspoon’s commercial director, expressed enthusiasm about the new partnership, stating: “We are delighted to have signed agreements with the Papas Group. We are looking at further opportunities and are confident that more franchise agreements will be signed.”
Andrew Papas, director of Papas Group, shared his excitement about the collaboration. He emphasised the intention to create pubs that will serve as vibrant community spaces, strategically situated outside the traditional high streets but still central to where communities thrive. “This partnership is about more than just expansion; it’s about restoration, revitalisation, and reinvestment in our local communities,” Papas commented.
He underscored the commitment to invigorating these venues by generating employment opportunities, providing excellent value and service, and maintaining the community-oriented ethos that JD Wetherspoon is known for.
