Record Surge in Pub Insolvencies Marks a Decade-High

Record Surge in Pub Insolvencies Marks a Decade-High

Posted by Emily on 18th Mar 2024

The UK pub industry faced a severe challenge in 2023, witnessing nearly 800 insolvencies, the highest figure in over ten years. Data from Price Bailey, a leading accountancy firm, reveals that 769 pubs were forced to close their doors permanently, marking a significant 48% increase from the 518 closures in 2022. This surge in insolvencies underscores the growing pressures on the pub sector, with the total count dropping to 38,175 from 41,015 a decade ago.

Further insights from Price Bailey suggest that the actual number of closures could be even higher, as some pubs shut down by larger chains may have yet to be accounted for in the insolvency figures. This is echoed by the statistic showing an average of 2.1 pub closures per day in 2023, a noticeable rise from 1.4 in the previous year.

The increase in pub closures is attributed to a combination of factors, including skyrocketing operational costs, decreased disposable income among consumers, disruptions from train strikes, and a spike in interest rates reaching 5.25% by year-end. Additionally, the phasing out of the government's £18 billion energy support package in early 2023 placed further financial strain on publicans.

Despite the bleak outlook for many, some segments within the industry, such as independent craft breweries and themed pubs offering unique social experiences, have shown resilience amidst the downturn. Matt Howard, head of insolvency and recovery at Price Bailey, highlighted the challenges faced by the sector, noting the highest level of pub failures in a decade. He emphasised the ongoing struggle with rising labour costs and the tough decisions publicans must make to remain profitable, often at the expense of customer relations.

The landscape for UK pubs continues to evolve, with significant challenges and opportunities on the horizon. What do you think lies ahead for the pub industry?
