The Soil Association's League Table Exposes UK's Best and Worst Children's Menus

The Soil Association's League Table Exposes UK's Best and Worst Children's Menus

Posted by Emma on 2nd Dec 2024

A new report from the Soil Association has raised concerns about the quality of children's meals served at some UK restaurant chains. The agricultural charity claims that many of these meals are pre-made, ultra-processed, and fail to meet freshly prepared, nutritious food expectations.

Findings from the 'Out to Lunch' Campaign

As part of its 'Out to Lunch' campaign, the Soil Association evaluated restaurant chains across the UK using secret diner families. Chains were ranked on health, sustainability, and overall dining experience. The findings revealed that many dishes for children included sugary desserts, additives deemed "problematic," and low-welfare meat.

Several well-known chains, such as Bella Italia, Prezzo, and TGI Fridays, were highlighted for warming up pre-made pasta sauces rather than preparing meals with fresh ingredients on-site. Fulham Shore's Franco Manca received criticism, ranking lowest for a lack of vegetables in its children's menu and insufficient transparency about ingredient sourcing and preparation.

Positive Steps and Industry Commitments

Despite the criticism, the report noted some positive developments. Chains such as Wahaca, JD Wetherspoon, Zizzi, Carluccio's, Toby Carvery, Harvester, and Leon have pledged to review and report on the use of ultra-processed ingredients in their kitchens.

Mexican chain Wahaca earned the top spot in the rankings for its focus on fresh, responsibly sourced ingredients. Wahaca's co-founder, Thomasina Miers, highlighted their efforts: "Grilling free-range chicken to order, prepping guacamole daily, and using Riverford organic produce has cut through the noise of chicken nuggets and chips. We are committed to fostering children's love of food and flavour."

JD Wetherspoon also performed well, ranking second. A spokesperson for the pub chain noted its commitment to offering nutritious, freshly prepared meals that cater to children and parents alike.

Other brands, such as Frankie & Benny's, were praised for their high-quality children's meals made with fresh ingredients. A representative from the chain emphasised their dedication to providing healthy, tasty options that align with family dining needs.

Concerns from the Soil Association

While acknowledging the financial pressures many restaurants face, Oona Buttafoco, senior policy officer at the Soil Association, expressed concern over the prevalence of ultra-processed foods in children's diets. "Some chains may be misleading or even ripping parents off by serving ready meals," she said.

However, Buttafoco also recognised restaurants' efforts excelling in transparency, ingredient sourcing, and health-conscious menu design. "It's encouraging to see some chains stepping up to provide freshly prepared, responsibly sourced, and affordable meals for families," she added.

The Bigger Picture

The Soil Association's findings underline the broader issue of ultra-processed foods dominating children's diets in the UK. While some restaurant chains have made significant strides towards healthier, fresher options, the report highlights the need to continue offering meals that parents can trust and children can enjoy.
