The UK’s Top Fish & Chip Restaurants Battle for Glory

Posted by Emma on 22nd Nov 2024

The National Fish & Chip Awards has announced the finalists for its prestigious Restaurant of the Year category. Five fish and chip establishments from across the UK have secured their place in the spotlight after months of rigorous assessments. Representing County Durham, Devon, Gloucestershire, London, and Tyne and Wear, these restaurants are in contention for the title of the nation’s best.

The competition, organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), is renowned for its exhaustive selection process. Participants undergo interviews, inspections, and a series of challenges aimed at showcasing innovation, quality, and customer experience. These high standards reflect the industry’s ambition to elevate its offerings and set new benchmarks for excellence.

The next step for the contenders involves mystery visits, where judges will assess the customer experience anonymously. The winner will be revealed at the grand awards ceremony on 26 February at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London.

The five finalists are:

  • Bells Fish & Chips (Framwellgate Moor) – County Durham
  • Pier Point – Torquay, Devon
  • Malt and Anchor – Cirencester, Gloucestershire
  • Toff’s of Muswell Hill (The Chesterford Group) – London
  • Trenchers Spanish City – Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear
  • Andrew Crook, President of the NFFF, praised the finalists for their dedication to excellence:

“The choice available in the restaurant space means fish and chip operators must pull out all the stops to stand out and attract customers. These finalists have demonstrated exceptional focus on product refinement and skill development, creating high-end dining experiences that elevate fish and chips to an art form. This year’s final promises to be truly outstanding.”

The Restaurant of the Year category is sponsored by the Q Partnership, a collaboration between Friars Pride, Henry Colbeck, and V.A. Whitley—three independent, family-owned suppliers to the fish and chip industry.

Luke Townsend, Marketing Manager at Friars Pride, expressed his admiration for the finalists:

“A massive congratulations to the top five fish and chip restaurants! It’s a remarkable achievement to reach this stage of the competition, especially with so many fantastic restaurants taking part. These finalists represent the very best of our industry, showcasing the quality and standards we strive for.”

Georgina Colbeck, Director at Henry Colbeck, echoed these sentiments:

“High five to the top five fish and chip restaurants! Our industry deserves the positive attention generated by the National Fish & Chip Awards, and with these five outstanding ambassadors, we are in great hands. We couldn’t be prouder to support this fantastic event.”

The stage is set for a thrilling finale as these five businesses await the ultimate verdict. For the industry, the awards continue to highlight the innovation and passion driving the UK’s favourite traditional meal.
