Wendy's to Open 400 Restaurants in the UK

Posted by Emma on 3rd May 2024

Wendy's, the well-known US burger chain recognised for its distinctive square burgers, is setting ambitious goals for growth in the UK, with plans to establish up to 400 restaurants. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to expand across Europe. Since re-entering the UK market in 2021 after a 20-year hiatus, Wendy's has successfully opened 37 locations, including 12 company-owned establishments.

During a recent investor call, questions arose regarding why Wendy's has not matched the UK presence of other US burger giants. Gunther Plosch, Wendy's Chief Financial Officer, outlined the company's targets for the near future. "Our goal is to increase our UK footprint to 45-50 restaurants by year's end. We are energised by the commitment of our franchise partners and our strategic focus on the UK as a gateway to further European ventures," Plosch explained.

Plosch further noted that Wendy's is actively exploring opportunities in other European countries, including Ireland and Spain. Kirk Tanner, President and CEO of Wendy's, added, "We are actively pursuing opportunities across Europe, recognising significant potential in these markets."

Founded in 1969 in Columbus, Ohio, Wendy's operates over 6,000 locations in the US. As part of its UK expansion this year, the chain plans to create more than 400 jobs. New restaurant openings are slated for various UK cities, including Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Sheffield, London, Southend-on-Sea, Colchester, Cambridge, and Newcastle.
