The National Fish & Chip Awards celebrates the outstanding contributions of three exceptional individuals who have gone above and beyond in their roles within the fish and chip industry. These finalists have demonstrated exceptionaldedication and industry knowledge and exhibited a level of commitment and innovation that has set them apart in a highly competitive sector.

The Employee of the Year award, one of the most prestigious honours in the industry, seeks to recognise individuals who consistently contribute to their businesses through hard work, problem-solving, and a spirit of collaboration. Whether it’s their enthusiasm for sustainable practices, commitment to delivering exceptional customer service, or dedication to personal development, these nominees have shown what it takes to excel in this fast-paced and ever-evolving sector.

This year’s finalists – Georgia Lye from Seafare Guildford in Surrey, Zak Bishop from Squires Fish Restaurant & Takeaway in Braunton, Devon, and Vaughn Jones from Scarlett’s Fish and Chips in Trearddur Bay, Anglesey – have each been nominated based on glowing recommendations from their peers. Their ability to elevate their workplaces and inspire those around them has caught the attention of the judging panel, who now face the tough task of selecting a winner.

Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), which organises the awards, explained the significance of the category: “Fish and chip businesses are made up of amazing individuals that live and breathe the industry in a way you don’t often see. This market is being challenged daily, and it’s because of people like our three finalists, who bring morale-boosting energy, problem-solving solutions, and personality. They make things much brighter for their employers and the industry as a whole.”

During the highly anticipated awards ceremony, the winner will be announced on 26 February at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London. The recipient will join Jamie Toland from Taylors, Stockport, who made history as the inaugural winner of the Employee of the Year Hall of Fame last year.

Smales, a leader in sustainable fish and seafood supply to the fish and chip industry, sponsors this year’s category. Bobby Joyce, Sales & Marketing Director of Smales, praised the finalists and the importance of recognising hard work in the sector. “Good staff keep your customers happy, so it is crucial for any business to recognise, develop, and reward those people,” he said. “We’re proud to sponsor this category, as it highlights the opportunities within the fish and chip sector and the long and rewarding careers it offers.”

As the countdown to the awards ceremony continues, all eyes will be on these exceptional individuals who have mastered their craft and shown that dedication and passion are the true ingredients for success in the fish and chip industry.
