Widespread Product Recalls Spark Concerns Over Peanut Contamination

Widespread Product Recalls Spark Concerns Over Peanut Contamination

Posted by Emma on 22nd Oct 2024

A significant number of spice products, including dips, seasonings, and curry powders, have been recalled following concerns about potential peanut contamination. Over 70 products have been withdrawn from the market due to the risk that they may contain traces of peanuts, despite the allergen not being declared on the label.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued a precautionary notice to recall the affected items, many of which were supplied by Leicester-based FGS Ingredients Ltd. The recalled products include popular brands such as Domino’s BBQ Dip and seasonings from retailers like Favourit, Dunnes Stores, and Westmorland Family Butchery. The FSA advised consumers to return the products for a full refund and to avoid consuming any affected items.

This recall follows an earlier incident in which FGS Ingredients recalled products due to possible peanut contamination in mustard ingredients. In response to these events, FGS Ingredients has conducted extensive testing across its range of products. While initial tests did not detect any traces of peanuts, further investigation revealed that some batches of mustard, imported from India, contained inconsistent traces of peanut residue. The contamination was found to have occurred at an agricultural level.

In a statement, FGS Ingredients stressed their commitment to consumer safety, explaining that they are working closely with the FSA and Leicester Environmental Health to ensure that any potentially harmful products are swiftly removed from the supply chain. The company also announced plans to switch to sourcing mustard from Canadian farms to prevent further issues.

Rebecca Subdworth, Director of Policy at the FSA, described the situation as a “complex investigation,” adding that efforts are ongoing to ensure all contaminated products are recalled. Subdworth emphasised the importance of individuals with peanut allergies avoiding all foods containing mustard or mustard derivatives until the situation is fully resolved.

FGS Ingredients, a 74-year-old family business, expressed regret over the contamination issue and reiterated that this was the first time they had been involved in such an incident. Despite the setback, they continue to support the FSA’s investigation and take all necessary measures to protect consumers.

This widespread recall serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in global food supply chains, where ingredients sourced from one part of the world can have far-reaching consequences. With ongoing investigations and heightened awareness of allergen risks, consumers and businesses alike must remain vigilant.
