JD Wetherspoon has unveiled impressive half-year results, showcasing a significant sales increase, nearly reaching the £1bn mark. Over the 26 weeks leading up to January 28, 2024, the company witnessed a 9.9% rise in like-for-like sales, with revenue climbing by 8.2% to £991m. Notably, operating profit soared by 81% to £67.7m, and profit before tax experienced a dramatic 682% increase, jumping from £4.6m in the first half of 2023 to £36m.

Chairman Tim Martin expressed optimism for the remainder of the financial year, highlighting a continued improvement in sales. "In the last seven weeks, up to March 17, 2024, like-for-like sales grew by 5.8%," he stated. Martin anticipates a positive financial outcome contingent on sustained sales performance.

Despite reaching unprecedented sales levels, Wetherspoon has seen a decrease in operational pubs from a peak of 955 in December 2015 to 814. However, sales per pub have surged by 50% over the past decade, with overall sales about one-third higher than in 2015. The report suggests the potential for expansion, estimating room for approximately 1,000 Wetherspoon pubs, with many existing locations possibly enlarging through additional outdoor spaces or neighbouring buildings.

In February, the chain implemented a 3% increase in food and beverage prices in response to economic conditions. Martin acknowledged the steady recovery post-pandemic, with sales at an all-time high, though he expressed concerns over potential future lockdowns and the government's inquiry into the pandemic response.
