McDonald's Responds to Consumers Eating at Home

Posted by Emily on 17th Mar 2024

In the face of economic constraints, McDonald's has observed a trend where more consumers, particularly those with limited income, are opting to dine at home instead of eating out. According to McDonald's CFO, Ian Borden, at the UBS Global Consumer and Retail Conference, this shift is a response to the cumulative effect of years of price increases in the fast-food industry, compounded by current inflation rates, which are more pronounced in the dining sector than in grocery shopping. Specifically, the cost of eating at quick-service restaurants surged by 5.2% over the past year, in stark contrast to a mere 1% increase in grocery prices, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated.

This trend is further exacerbated by the depletion of savings accumulated during the pandemic among lower-income groups, leading to a more challenging consumer environment. Despite McDonald's raising its prices by approximately 10% annually in 2022 and 2023—actions that contributed to a more than 30% growth in system-wide sales since 2019—the company plans to moderate its pricing strategy due to cooling inflation and growing consumer caution towards price hikes.

In response to the evolving consumer expectations around value for money, McDonald's intends to emphasise affordability and value deals in 2024. Borden highlighted plans to aggressively promote value bundles, such as those under $4 in the U.S. and the successful McSmart offer in Germany. Additionally, McDonald's aims to leverage its app more effectively to provide special offers to loyalty program members, reinforcing its brand positioning around value and affordability.

Borden expressed confidence in McDonald's ability to navigate economic uncertainties by capitalising on the "trade-down effect," where consumers shift from higher-priced dining options to more affordable ones.
