Jamie Russo of Redcloak Fish Bar in Stonehaven, Scotland, has been awarded the prestigious Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year 2024. Winning this accolade places him in the esteemed company of past recipients of the Malcolm Lee Trophy. The competition, returning after a hiatus due to pandemic restrictions, challenges participants under 25 to demonstrate their expertise in the fish frying industry through a rigorous three-stage process. This includes showcasing their knowledge, preparation, and frying skills, evaluated by industry experts during on-site visits.

Russo distinguished himself among a strong field of candidates with his exceptional skill and evident passion for fish frying. His victory signals the beginning of what promises to be a stellar career, following in the footsteps of former winners who have achieved significant success in the industry.

The competition was fierce, with notable finalists including Kieran Bulpit of Linfords Traditional Fish and Chips, James Ellams of Fish and Chips @ Weston Grove, and Glen Marshall Morrison of Garioch Fish Bar.

Andrew Crook, President of the National Federation of Fish Friers and awards organiser, praised the high calibre of participants, singling out Russo for exceeding expectations. Kelvin Lee, Managing Director of Drywite Ltd and award sponsor, commended Russo's advanced knowledge and business acumen, anticipating a bright future for him in the industry.

Russo has been invited on an educational trip to Norway with Seafood from Norway as part of his win. This experience will offer him an in-depth look at the Norwegian fishing industry, focusing on sustainability and the practices that ensure the freshest, highest quality seafood for UK fish and chip shops.
